The Band

Claire Watson

Vocals, Washboard, Percussion

Claire has loved singing from an early age and her passion for jazz & swing grew through dancing Lindyhop.  Her appearances include two Bude Jazz Festivals, several Blues Summer Schools, and Jazz Divas performances at Calstock Arts Centre.   She is particularly influenced by Ella Fitzgerald & Nina Simone.   Claire is also a  member of Palida choir & two ukelele bands.

Nick Powell

Jazz Guitar, Spanish Guitar

Nick has played jazz guitar most of his life, starting as a teenager with his bass player Dad.  He's played most styles- swing, gypsy, be-bop and even, when young and foolish, briefly with an avant-garde group.  Having to earn a proper living to support his family has limited his musical ambitions, but now retired he can spend more time hitting the six.

David Botterill

Double Bass, Vocals

David is a very talented multi-instrumentalist and his knowledge of jazz tunes, musicians and history is extensive.  He is a very busy man, frequently playing for musical productions at Shaftesbury Arts Centre and he also plays  with Sturminster Newton Orchestra and Miles Away.  He has played with Dorchester Big Band & Shaftesbury Swing Band as well other jazz ensembles.

Diana Harris

Jerome Pegler

Drums, Djembe

Diana is an extremely versatile saxophone player and is particularly good at improvisation.  She has played with Shaftesbury Swing Band & Bell Street Jazz Band and also plays with Saxophony, Dorchester Big Band and Sturminster Newton Orchestra.

Jerome is our latest and youngest addition to the band and he has fitted in like a duck to water.  He also plays with Miles Away and can frequently be seen drumming for Shaftesbury Arts Centre productions.

Sunny Side of Swing is in its 3rd incarnation, previously being called Hobohemians.  Hobohemians evolved out of a jazz jam session Claire started at the Rising Sun in Donhead near Shaftesbury.  Recordings on here are from our 2nd incarnation & include Phil on keyboard & Chris on percussion.  We'll soon add more recent recordings.
